History

Please see Tshwane Community Learning Centre for History from 1991.

Phases

Grade R

This reception year for 5 or 6 year olds serves as a vital bridge between the non formal early learning and the formal education of the next 12 years. Emphasis is on school readiness through a learning program that is totally integrated with our Grade 1 curriculum.

Present facilities include four class room blocks and a large playing area to accommodate 80 children.

Children from informal settlements who are on tuition support form part of this phase.

Upgrading and further development are required to complete the complex to house 100 children.

General Education: Grade 1-9

During the compulsory education phase the emphasis is on learning skills and preparation for the Further Education phase.

The three phases of the General Education and Training Band are: Foundation Phase (Grade 1-3), Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to 6) and the Senior Phase (Grade 7 to 9).

The compulsory prescribed state curriculum is implemented, applying a Biblical perspective.

Present facilities can accommodate 150 learners (with the overflow being accommodated in unoccupied rooms elsewhere.)

Children from informal settlements proceeding from the reception year phase form part of this phase.

Major upgrading and extension of facilities is required to absorb the above overflow and to provide for the projected growth in student numbers.

Senior School: Further Education and Training (FET): Grade 10-12 (academic)

The emphasis is on preparation of our students for tertiary studies. Over the past years we have attained a consistent 100% pass rate in the external school leaving certificate examinations (IEB), with former students having graduated in Medicine, Science and Accounting. Some of these students were on our tuition support program.

The Senior School shares facilities with the Junior/Middle School. Upgrading of class rooms and the computer centre is required.

Learning programmes

The South African state prescribed learning programmes of Outcomes Based Education (OBE) are followed in all phases.

External Assessment

At the exit levels of Grade 9 (GET) and Grade 12 (FET), the Independent Examination Board serves as external assessment body.  National Senior Certificates are issued by Umalusi.

Benchmarking

To monitor the quality of teaching and learning , the Grade 1 to 7 classes sit for the annual Conquesta examinations.  National Olympiads in Mathematics and Science are offered to senior learners.  From 2010 the IEB recommended international benchmarking tests for Mathematics will be implemented in several grades.

Results

With the exception of two final year classes, the school has obtained a 100% pass rate in all Senior Certificate examinations since 1999, regardless of the fact that many of our learners are from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Former students

Senior Certificate graduates are doing well at universities with two of them having completed their medical studies and three more in the process.  Others have completed B Com, B Sc and B Eng degrees.

Financial support project

We are supporting the Children at risk as well as the destitute children programmes.  Seventy learners are benefiting from the financial aid project run by the school.

Outreaches

The school is involved in outreaches to Medicoss school for mentally challenged children and George Mukari Hospital Children's wards.
