Intern Earned her Teaching Qualification

We are proud to announce that Mrs. Leaveness Mshiane received her Diplma in Education from UNISA.  She had been a trainee teacher on the internship programme of Tshwane Community Learning Centre for the past few years.  During her training period she gained thorough experience as a class assistant in the Foundation Phase and Grade 4, and also assisted the HOD Foundation Phase with administration.  Since last year, she has been appointed as a full time teacher in the Intermediate Phase, where she inspires the Grade 5 and 6 learners with her enthusiasm.

Our own Maths Guru

We have just been blessed with the third "first" this term!  Thabiso Mondlane (Grade 9) has received an invitation from the University of Pretoria to be a team member representing the Gauteng province at a national mathematics competition in September.  He made it through to the second round of the Maths Olympiad.  To encourage learners' development in Mathematics, the school lets Grade 8 to 12 learners participate in the Mathematics Olympiad every year, and for younger learners, in the AMESA Maths Challenge (Gr 4 - 7) and Conquesta (Gr 1-7).

Another First for Tshwane

Two of our Grade 5 learners, Kholofelo Makwela and Prevail Sithole, took part in the Afrikaans Arts Competition for Primary School learners who take Afrikaans as an additional language.  Both of them achieved Gold for reciting their poems excellently.  A further achievement was that Kholofelo was placed first overall, recieving a golden medal for that, and that Prevail was placed third overall.  They were coached by our HOD Foundation Phase, the talented Mrs. Soekie Olivier.

First Aptitude Tests

To improve the quality of our career guidance, Tshwane Christian School introduced Standard Aptitude Tests.  Learners in Grades 9 and 10 have already completed the assessment and received their results.  The result reports will aid them and their parents to choose subjects and broad career areas that suit their potential and abilities.  Grade 11 learners will do their test at the end of the term in preparation of their choosing further studies and careers.

Animals on Wheels

Animals on Wheels visited the school to present open air lessons to the Intermediate and Junior Phases.  On 20 May, Grades 4 to 6 had a hands-on experience of domestic animals and reptiles, including snakes.  Uncle Ross and his team made sure that each learner got a turn to touch every furry or feathery friend.  At the beginning of the day almost all the learners got the jitters when tame birds were brought close to them, but by the end of the day, some had the courage to "wear" a dangerous python around the neck!

Freaky Science Show

On 5 May, about 120 learners in Grade 3, 4 and 5 attended the exciting Freaky Science Show in our own hall.  Professor Freaky and mischievous Debbie demonstrated basic science concepts.  First they explained words like "science", "theory" and "experiment" in a fun way.  Then they performed several spectacular experiments.  Learners learnt what substances, fluids and gases are.  The best part was to see what happens if you mix them together!  Everyone will remember that water and oil are immisscible (don't mix) and that oil is lighter than water.  The lava

Parents' Day

On Saturday afternoon 8 May a record number of parents attended the parents' day.  At the general meeting in the hall, parents were welcomed by the Junior Choir, singing ever so sweetly and beautifully!  Aunty Gertie and the Grade 1 to 3 teachers had taught them so well that they were able to sing and move all on their own, while two of them conducted the choir themselves.  Thereafter the audience was entertained by the Grade 6s who performed the humurous Afrikaans poem "Die Snippermandjie" (waste basket).  Many parents were pleasantly surprised by the good progress this

Better Facilities

Our Pre-school playground's jungle gyms sparkle with a bright new coat of paint.  Tyres were added to help develop the little ones' motor skills and balance.  Thanks to two different sponsors, some much needed renovations and upgrading have been completed recently.  In other areas of the school, roofs, walls and passage floors have been repaired, plastered or painted.  Thank you to staff members of VIP Softline for beautifying the Pre-school playground last year and to the Canadian friend of the school who sponsored the structural renovations.

Learner Wins Poster Competition

Kgomotso Mahlangu (Grade 9), one of Tshwane Christian School's talented learners, won a national poster design competition, which was organised by the Department of Social Welfare and sponsored by the UN.   The theme was "Planning your family is planning for a better future".  Two striking elements of Kgomotso's winning design are a tree and a bridge dividing the poster into two sections - a sad and bleak picture of poverty, drugs and a lack of education on the one side and a contrasting bright picture of a happy future on the other side.
